On October 23, 2017, The Graduate School of National Taiwan University Business Administration and Taiwan Cooperative Bank warmly invited the chairman of Pegatron Corporation, Hsu-Tien, Tung to give the speech “My View in Human Cultures and Technology” at National Taiwan University.
Chairman Tung is not only achieved in technological areas but also devoted to creative writing and humanism, implementing “sustainable development”, the corporate goal.
Perhaps, long-term investment is the one and only way to maintain sustainable operations within corporations. Chairman Tung praised The Eslite Bookstore as “the most elegant shopping facility” in his speech, explaining how corporations cannot rush in time and tempo. Social responsibility efforts that corporations make often requires time to become beneficial, and once it does, it can bring back great values.
At the time Chairman Tung founded ASUS, many people estimated that the company will be closed down in 3 years because of their lack in experience, resources and funding. However, they showed everyone wrong. Chairman Tung said the main reason was due to the IC industry at the time, when companies can succeed in specializing one single product line (also known as the “Open Industry”). Now, the IC industry needs vertical integration.
Chairman Tung also mentioned that the separation between the two companies ASUS and Pegatron is not as serious as how everyone believes. The nature of the company’s orders at the time varies hence the company needed to make a separation. Chairman Tung also corrected the myth of earing “low-margin in the OEM industry” but agreed that the industry has a high entry barrier.
Last but not least, Chairman Tung mentioned his process of joining the Eslite Bookstore. Resources are precious. It is a management sin if one wastes resources and makes no progress. The reason why Chairman Tung chooses Eslite is because of the financial circumstance they had. Eslite wanted to bring out a different cultural landscape but had a deficit because of rent, land price, and the rise of online shopping. But through economic scale, more precise and complex management, and also taking advantage of other business bodies, Eslite managed to balance back and make a path of their own. This all needs time but it is also why Chairman Tung chose Eslite.
