Sun Yun-Hsuan Management Forum Liu Ke-Zhen: Chairman of Advantech IoT, Sharing Economy, and The Third Wave of Digital Revolution

  On 2017 December 7th, the second Sun Yun-Hsuan Management Forum of the semester, which was organized by The Graduate School of National Taiwan University Business Administration and co-organized by Taiwan Cooperative Bank, was held. Liu Ke-Zhen, the chairman of Advantech, which is one of the representative companies of Taiwan’s computer industry, gave a speech on “IoT, Sharing Economy, and The Third Wave” explaining the changes in the digital revolution and the strategy Advantech adjusts upon the rise of IoT: leading traditional industries transformation through pushing sharing economy.

  Chairman Liu briefed through the history of the three digital revolutions with the book “The Third Wave”. He pointed out that digital revolution waves rises around every 15 years. The first revolution was around 1985-1999 with PC’s and the internet as the main products. Many people bought their first computer throughout this period and Taiwan companies were considered quite successful during the time. 8 computers out of 10 were manufactured in Taiwan, which made us the “PC Kingdom”.

The second revolution was the rise of mobile devices, APP’s and the speed and usage of internet. Now, 4 out of the top 5 companies in the world are operated through platforms. Chairman Liu analyzed that Taiwan was not suitable for the second revolution back in the days since the winners needed large markets such as China, America.

 The third revolution is what is happening now: The Internet of Things (IoT). The main focuses of IoT are cloud computing service, partner relationships, and sharing platform. Chairman Liu sees many potential in Taiwan during the third revolution and considers the development of IoT is a huge industry opportunity for Taiwan. He also encourages youngsters to aim for this rising trend in future careers.
