Social innovation, a win-win for corporate and society

“NTU EMBA is a pioneer on a mission of value!” As the top university in Taiwan, NTU EMBA CEO Xie Ming-Hui specifies the ambition and direction for NTU EMBA, which are also the greatest possible values that NTU EMBA could create for the society in Taiwan. He clearly points out that the purpose of higher education in management must equally satisfy both shareholders’ interest and social responsibilities, management capacity and entrepreneur spirit, intellect knowledge and the body, mind, and soul. In other words, the context as emphasized in modern social innovation means paying attention to social issues, relentlessly pursue innovation, blending corporate into the society as a whole, and taking part in the progress and development of the society.

Social innovation is a fulfillment pattern for corporate social responsibility (CSR), by blending the concepts and principles of CSR into corporate daily operation management, like DNA of a corporate. Through social innovation, CSR is no longer responsibilities unique to big corporate. Any corporate, regardless of scope, may develop a social innovation pattern unique to its own, if it wishes so.

As NTU EMBA has planting seeds of hope in the past years, many of its alumni members are pushing for social innovation in their professions. Lin You-Xin of Class 2005 applies GPS technology in Village Safe Box. Hong Guang-Li, of Class 2005, General Manager of 104 job bank, applies his internet specialty to solve social problems, and is able to profit from it as well. Zhu Yuan-Zhong of Class 2007 applies public welfare concepts in his open operation and wins B-type Corporate certificate in 2016. These seeds are exercising their influences the public quietly in businesses and society, as well as among the faculty and students of NTU EMBA, promoting more social benefits to internalize as new and unique context in social innovation.

Guardian of the underprivileged: GPS Village Safe Box

For 20 years, NTU EMBA has been rallying countless corporate elites. Driven by the new wave of social innovation ideas, many former students have been practicing the concepts of social innovation in their corporate governance and help to fulfill social innovation with the knowledge they have learned. Lin You-Xin of Class 2005 is an example of success in the fulfillment of social innovation.

Lin established X4GPS jointly with 3 fellow EMBA students in 2007. In the beginning, they focused on mobile phone positioning technology and software development. 4 years ago when they helped New Taipei City to deploy Smart Village Chief system, they made acquaintance with village chiefs and learned the hardship that the bottom social class has to go through. He found the needs among these hardships and realized that he could help to improve. Out in pure compassion, he started with the companies working with him and launched the Village Safe Box that adopts to the folk practice of worshipping twice a month. Goods donated by corporate as worship offerings are turned into practical daily goods, which are deposited in these boxes, purchased by volume at NT500 apiece, and village chiefs may distribute these goods to the households in needs.

During such a process, Lin applies his expertise in GPS on these Village Safety Box. An App can track movement of each of these boxes. The village chiefs can use the App for taking photos of the whereabouts of these boxes and pass the photos to the corporate donators. Recipients can use the App to write down their comments and appreciations. This innovative business model has created a collective winning situation among corporate, village chiefs, family in needs, and even city/county governments. The delivery of each of the Safety Box means not only goods of NT 500 worth, but also the warm cares from the society.

Lin proudly says that he is happy to help the villages and help the underprivileged to live a better life.

104 online job placement satisfy needs

Same as a student of Class 2005, Hong Guang-Li, of Class 2005, General Manager of 104 job bank, also applies the ideas of social innovation in corporate governance. 104 job bank is a famous job matching website in our country. With the idea of serving people in mind, its job matching process terminates the unfair information access between job seekers and employers, and fairly discloses information of both sides. Therefore, job seekers and employers may better understand each other and thus find partners ideal for working together. The one-directional job seeking process practiced in the past has been changed to new two-directional process.

104 has noticed the ever-worsening situations in recent years of aging and low birth rate in Taiwanese society, and, as to fulfill CSR mission, 104 is expanding its target customer profile to the elderly and young students to serve the needs comprehensively across all age groups and realize the new goal of caring for the elderly, chances for the strong, and apprenticeship for the youth.

For students in school, 104 has established the 104 Green Tutors, where volunteer teachers answer to the various questions raised by students and offer a channel of online learning for students in school. For grown adults, 104 has established the 104 Dream Cradle, a fund-raising platform where people can learn about responsibility and execution, thus finding their own values and directions. For elderly, 104 has established 104 Silver-Hair Bank, which aims to provide comprehensive and convenient services targeting at elderly’s needs of diet, clothing, housing, transportation, entertainment, and medical care, using cloud-computing, community, and GPS.

Expanding from simple job matching to tutors for children, dreams come true for grown adults, and daily needs for the elderly, 104 applies its expertise in online technology to help solving the social problems. While realizing profits, it also fulfills the social value of corporate.

Based on public benefits: Org Better offers organization diagnosis

Corporate is an important element in modern society, and under the structure of capitalism, corporate is arguably the main force that stabilizes the society and drives the society forward. Therefore, the status of an individual corporate development not only concerns its employee, but also, considering the relational influence among industrial chains and their consequential ripple effect, brings great impact on the entire society. As a result, the Org Better, a spin-off managed by the former, gen-1 senior executives, uses its years of experiences in corporate management as its pitch for repaying the society.

Org Better is jointly established by Zhu, Yuan-Zhong, of Class 2007, and his fellow students. Realizing that traditional consultancy houses charging premium prices are having difficulty in survival and that corporates seeking changes are burdened with hefty consultant bills, Zhu then introduces innovative ideas in the legacy pattern and offers organizational diagnosis, a new form of management consultancy that may effectively diagnose organizations and increase consultancy efficiency by conducting highly reliable, systematic questionnaire survey to collect employee’s opinions, analyzing such questionnaire, and interviewing, through consultants, key business units and executives, and to learn about 5 major constructs of leadership, execution, company system, organizational culture, and teamwork.

As an innovative, systematic corporate management consultancy model, organizational diagnosis is now patent pending, but Org Better is not keeping it to itself. Rather, due to B-type business idea of sharing, Org Better is collaborating with other consultancy houses and jointly promoting organizational diagnosis, allowing more businesses facing organizational changes to access to assistance in time and transform successfully. Therefore, the impact brought by inappropriate management of businesses onto the society may be avoided.

From tie idea of organizational diagnosis sharing, Zhu Yuan-Zhong wins B-type business in 2016

NTU EMBA education is now the cornerstone for the co-prosperity of business and society

Taiwanese society is experience environment pollution, labor disputes, and series of food safety problems traceable to its economic rising. Modern businesses must understand that they too are entities of Planet Earth; when the society and environment are damaged, they suffer as much as well. Public interests and private interests are never the product of a zero-sum game. NTU EMBA is promoting its executive education that aims to fulfill CSR that benefits equally to profits, humanity, and environment and ecosystem. The right way toward sustainable development is making executive education the cornerstone for the co-prosperity of business and society.
