The EMBA graduation ceremony of National Taiwan University (NTU) was held today (6/17) in the NTU Sports Center. The 85-year-old lady started her journey all the way from Italy to Taiwan at age 29. She founded the Fangji kindergarten in the town of Jianshi, Hsinchu County, helping poor children and elderly people, and it’s been 57 years since. Today, Madam Zhao came to address on behalf of the VIPs, encouraging the graduates by saying, “The heart of loving Taiwan is more than a verbal expression; it’s all about personal fulfillment in feedback to the society with a mind of dedication, and even a single person’s effort can make a difference.” Hopefully, the EMBA graduates can take Madam Zhao as a role model to contribute and feedback to Taiwan, helping with the social issues to create entrepreneurial and social win-win values.

Professor Li Shu-Hsing, vice president of NTU, also encouraged the graduates to apply what they had learned from the 3-year programs with creative thinking to the industrial development, for the values that creativity business stands for. In the end, Mr. Guo Rui-Xiang, Dean of College of Management urged the graduates to uphold the spirit of “setting out together; and reaching destination together” in teamwork, regardless of where you are from, to make the elites across the strait move forward faster, and farther, together. The graduates of NTU EMBA programs may very well set their learning to the creation of second curve of life, taking care of the values of living, family, people connections, and life, all together.

The class of 2014 EMBA graduates are elites from a variety of industrial sectors, including Jane Yi-Zhen, the founder of Barista Coffee, who believes that one can get back to the destination only by oneself, through persistent learning in leading the business moving forward. There are more business elites from the other side of the strait, such as Mr. Zhou Cheng, General Manager of Hangzhou Tianchuang Import and Export; Mr. Li Tien-Hua, General Manager of Shanghai Yi Zhou Information System; Mr. Zhou Jun, President of both Shanghai Shuangshen Medical Instrument and Ningbo Medical Technology; and Mr. Wang Li, Asset Management Director of Hengdian Group.

In addition to those creating business values, there are other social elites of the class enthusiastically engaged in social issues. Mr. Su Feng-Zheng, president of Lextar Electronics, launched the “Let’s read for the dreams to come true” campaign, urging his corporate employees to help improve the learning environment of five remote elementary schools. M.D. Liu Li, a pioneer of Taiwan’s children medical, combined social welfare programs by launching NTU’s children’s new paradise program titled “more laughers, less cries.” Rao Rui-Ying, executive director of Landseed International Medical Group, a dedicator to social issues who undertook the role as the president of the EMBA class student council, was awarded the Student Altruistic Award by the College of Management and became the college’s representative contender for NTU’s Special Social Contribution Award. Ms. Zeng Xiang-Juan, general manager of OEC Group, also a member of the EMBA Fudan group, hosted the non-profit WTA competition “International OEC Tennis Tournament” for 10 years in a row, with a heart of charity.

Despite the heavy load of studies, The EMBA graduates were all uninterruptedly dedicated to the social welfare during their studies, and this is exactly one of the core values of the NTU EMBA programs.

A special figure among the students was Mr. Lin Yi-Jie, Taiwan’s super runner, who added athletic entrepreneurial features to the student background of NTU EMBA programs. And Mr. Li Ming-Zhe, the COO of KKBOX, a guy of 141kg in weight, started to walk for his health and did exercise together with his classmates, and finally he lost 58kg in just one year, making it one of the most remarkable achievements from the EMBA programs in addition to the academic studies.

The student representative for the speech at the EMBA graduation ceremony was Mr. Wang Ding-Qian, President of Humble House Taipei. As he recalled, the first day of the school, he was in a wheelchair rolling into the classroom by his wife. Today, he is walking at ease on his own with a stick. Mr. Wang is very grateful to his wife, as well as all the EMBA teachers and classmates for their attentive care and encouragement during the school days, which supported him to walk through the journey, overcoming all the inferiority complex and reclaiming the passion for learning. In the speech, he took the theory of Porter’s Five Forces and leveled it up to five appreciations: appreciation for his family (for the support and company), appreciation for the teachers (for the teachings), appreciation for the classmates (for their empathetic hearts), appreciation for the school (for the superior environment), and appreciation for the NTU EMBA programs (for getting us all together).

Attracting the most diverse social elites to fulfill NTU EMBA’s social innovation

The theme of this year’s NTU EMBA graduation ceremony was “social innovation”. Ms. Hsieh Ming-Huei, CEO of the EMBA programs, remarked that the NTU EMBA was aimed to lead Chinese world with the EMBA learning to fulfill social innovation. She also noted that EMBA students were from different industrial and business sectors, with distinctive backgrounds, specialties, experiences and interests, and such an exuberant diversity had infused a great deal of energy to the origin of innovation.

LendBand is the first and successful P2P online financial technology business introduced by the NTU EMBA programs. Ms. Hsieh argued that the idea of launching this creative business startup project was aimed to transform smart thinking into real operational models. The LendBand Online Startups upholds NTU EMBA’s spirit of “social innovation” to build its own business startup, and help Taiwan’s startup entrepreneurs cross over the initial financial barrier. The success of LendBand shows NTU EMBA is in the startup business for real.

In recent years, Taiwan has confronted the issues of climate change, environment pollution, food safety crisis, and labor disputes, which had deeply disturbed the society. In view of this, NTU EMBA sets forth high-level management education and emphasizes that businesses in making profits should also look into human welfare, social environment, and employee benefits, so as to grasp the optimal balance between entrepreneurial and social values. The NTU EMBA has a strong belief in that the co-existence and mutual benefits of business and society is a right way to sustainable development.
