The abstract:
Using unique datasets from a super-app, Alipay, we examine how gamification nudges users' green investment decisions. We find that greater engagement in gamified green interactions, designed for environmental education, leads users to allocate a higher proportion of their mutual fund portfolio to green funds. Gamified green interactions enhance users' green consciousness, measured by daily low-carbon activities, plausibly via more exposure to green educational materials. Our findings are stronger among males, users with lower wealth, and those with lower engagement. Our study documents the first mechanism in which gamified green interactions facilitate green investments by enhancing individuals' green consciousness.
